There are pros and cons to every decision in life and learning niche marketing is no different.

Unfortunately, this profession is often hyped by those who promote it to the point where it might appear to be the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that is just waiting to fall into your lap at the snap of your fingers.

For some it does in fact become a very lucrative means of income. For others it provides a stable income, and for some, no income at all.

When learning niche marketing, think of it as a change to another profession, a profession where you are in charge of the business. Like every other business owner, whether online or off, it will require time, effort, investment and education to achieve success.

Having said that, let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of working in niche marketing online.

Advantages Of Niche Marketing

1. Market Focus

Niche marketing focuses on a small segment of a given market as opposed to the mass marketing with which we are most familiar. Because of this focus, you have the ability to get to know the consumer that you are targeting a great deal better. With this knowledge, you are better able to provide content that is helpful, build a reputation, and find products that this segment of the market is looking for.

2. Targeted Investment

If you have done your homework and taken the time to get to know your niche consumer, you are aware of the issues and problems that they are looking to solve. You are also aware of the language that they use when discussing these issues. With this knowledge in hand, you are able to target your investment of time and capital in a manner that speaks to this type of consumer in the language they most commonly use.

This ability allows you to invest time in creating your online presence through a website, blog, content, and article composition in a manner that will be accepted and seen as authoritative by your intended audience.

If you are investing in PPC advertising, you will know the language they tend to use when using a search engine to find what they are looking for. This allows you to target your ad copy and keywords to the needs of that specific niche and the potential customers within that niche.

3. Increased Income Potential

While it is true that you will be going after a smaller group of people, the people in this group are far more likely to be buyers for the products you are promoting. Mass marketing works on the premise that if enough advertising is thrown out there, someone will be attracted and buy the product.

This school of thought can quickly drain the wallet of an online niche marketer who has limited resources of time and funding to work with, particularly if they are using PPC as a means of drawing in potential customers. Targeted PPC ads are far more likely to draw in a paying customer than ones that are setup to address general markets.

Disadvantages Of Niche Marketing

1. Smaller Market Share

Although targeting a smaller audience is in fact a major advantage for the niche marketer, it can also be a disadvantage. The disadvantage occurs when the market share is too small to produce an income that is substantial enough to support the income needs of the niche marketer. For this reason, many niche marketers, if not most, will be working in more than one niche at a time to increase income generated by their efforts.

2. Competition

Even if you were the first to discover a lucrative niche, over time, others will want in on it as well and you will need to increase your efforts in order to maintain a reliable income from that niche.

If you are one who is trying to break into a niche where you have competitors, it will take time and effort on your part to build up your reputation within the niche and to get your ads and content listed at the top of the search engine results.

Higher competition will also mean higher rates for clicks in your PPC advertising. Niche marketers are encouraged to diversify their efforts into many niches to help out when markets become mature and too competitive. Having only one niche is equivalent to putting all of your eggs in one basket.

3. Cannibalization

Cannibalization is a term more frequently heard of in the mass marketing industry, however, it applies to niche marketing as well. Cannibalization occurs in a business when it releases a new and improved version of a product and as a result, the value and market share of a pre-existing product decreases.

In the world of niche marketing, and the world of online business as a whole, there are newer and better products constantly being released. A dramatic example of this would be the technology changes between the time when videocassette recorders ruled the market place and their subsequent replacement in that market share by the DVD recorders of today.

4. It’s A Business

While this may seem like an obvious statement, it is rather surprising how many people fail to realize that niche marketing is a profession and a business. It requires capital and commitment to grow and like any other business, it also requires customer relation skills, financial management and constant learning.

If you want to use your niche marketing as a business for tax purposes, you will want to maintain separate banking and accounting information at the absolute minimum. Failure in this area could have your application for business expenses denied at tax time.

As well, because it is a business, it will be important for you to stay on top of any licensing requirements, regulations such as FTC regulations, and tax collection and remittance requirements. Ignorance is neither bliss nor accepted as an excuse for not following laws and regulations within the industry. It won’t cut you any slack with the tax department either if they decide this is just a hobby for you and not a legitimate business.

If you are thinking of learning niche marketing and developing a business around it, it is important for you to be aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of niche marketing rather than just the hype that is more commonly seen on the Internet.

With this information in hand, you will be better prepared to make an informed decision as to whether niche marketing is what is best for you and to meet its inherent challenges head on.

Once your blog has reached a certain level of maturity where it stands out from the others as a driving force within your niche, the option to get paid to write reviews on your blog as a method of blog monetization may open up for you.

The ability to get paid to write reviews becomes an option once you have demonstrated your expertise in a given area and developed a following.

In a nutshell, once you have done the hard work of becoming recognized and paid your dues. When your expertise is presented in high traffic formats, catching the eye of companies who use paid reviews as part of their promotion strategy, becomes easier.

Getting Started

The first step required to break into the field of paid reviews is to see that your blog is registered with the search engines and review sites. This makes review sites aware of your interest in working with them and provides them with the opportunity to check you out. As a representative of their product, they will want to ensure that you are legitimate.

Product reviews are being written everyday on almost every product imaginable, such as electronics, cell phones, sports equipment, and the list goes on. Reviews are also frequently written for the entertainment industry. You may want to write a movie or book review. Keep the reviews you choose to do about products that you have an interest in and that fit with the content and audience of your blog.

A couple of sites where you might sign for the opportunity to get paid to write reviews are: Reviewstream.com and Ciao.com. Typically, if one of your reviews is accepted, you will be paid a flat rate for it, and possibly an additional amount if the people who read your reviews mark it as having been helpful to them.

Guest blogging is yet another method of getting your reviews seen and talked about. Your site link will be included in your guest post, which in turn, encourages traffic back to your blog. Guest blogging, particularly on blogs with a higher profile than your own blog, help you to get noticed by those companies that are interested in your area of expertise.

Having your own unique domain name will be a worthwhile investment for this type of blog monetization. If you have been using a free service, you may want to look at either upgrading or moving your blog to another hosting platform with its own domain name.

The downside of moving away from a free hosting service is that you will lose any investment in traffic building you have done up to that point as that traffic will be tied to the name or domain that was previously used. Certainly something to think about carefully if you are just starting out. Is the use of a free service going to be worth the sacrifice later on.

A further consideration, should you decide to move to a different hosting platform is whether you will be using Wordpress for your blog. If so, choosing a Wordpress friendly blog hosting provider will greatly enhance your ability to enjoy working in Wordpress. Click here for our reviews of the TOP 3 Wordpress hosting providers.

Choosing What To Do

There is more than one way to write paid reviews. Some companies will pay you per review that you post on your blog. Some things you will want to consider before going with this method are:

The number of reviews required to earn enough to make it worthwhile, and
The quality of the reviews you are being asked to post

You don’t want to turn the blog you have worked so hard in building up into a “post-for-hire” blog. You most certainly do not want to be posting trash that will lower the blog’s value and quality. A simpler method of choice may be to choose companies that allow you to submit your review to them for publishing and that include a link back to your blog.

Sites like Amazon and eBay often allow readers to post reviews on the different products that they offer. These reviews help the readers of those sites to make more informed choices when purchasing and once again, can give you added exposure for you as a writer and also to your blog.

You may also choose to write reviews on affiliate products that you represent, or on any product or product creator that is relevant to your blog and target audience. These reviews can help you to hi-light the pros and cons of products you represent for your readers.

Keep in mind at all times the FTC regulations that came into effect on December 1, 2009. You must be open and up front with your readers when writing reviews of any nature and disclose what’s in it for you if they take action as a result of one of the reviews that you have written.

This requirement has caused a fair bit of concern on the part of those writing reviews. Its intent is to give greater credibility to reviews that people are counting on to help make a purchasing decision. In the long run, this will help, rather than hinder your efforts.

The Downside of Paid Reviews

As one person once said, just because you are able to do something, does not mean it is a good idea for you to do it. The same type of thinking needs to be applied when considering whether or not you want to monetize by writing paid reviews.

Many search engines frown on the concept of paid reviews, especially Google. As with all that you do to increase the revenue from your blog, you need to consider the impact those choices will have over all.

If you depend heavily on being in Google’s good books for other areas of monetization, paid reviews may be a poor choice for you. For a more in-depth look at why you may want to avoid using paid reviews, visit John Lockwood’s article, Should You Write a Paid Review? Ask Yourself These Six Questions

The opportunity to get paid to write reviews on your blog opens up a new income opportunity for you and you only need an opinion on the subject matter to make it happen.

Take into consideration the different types of review writing open to you, and decide if this income source is a good fit for you and your blog. If so, ensure your blog is positioned to take the best advantage of this income stream, and comply with all FTC regulations in regards to transparency and disclosure to get the most out of this area of blog monetization.

Have you ever noticed that your greatest article inspirations come when it is least appropriate? Very seldom are writers inspired when they take time to sit down and come up with ideas. Instead, those ideas occur in a variety of other places and occasions. While many come from real life situations as they are occurring, they also tend to just “pop” into our thoughts while we are at work, driving the car, working in the garden or whatever.

Some of you may even awaken in the dead of night as a thought or solution to something you’ve been working on suddenly needs to be expressed. For some unknown reason, your brain has finished chewing on an idea it has kept on the backburner and decides that there is room in the chaos of thoughts that you have during the day or in the downtime of the night to now present it’s conclusions.

When this happens, capturing your thoughts with pen and paper may not always be convenient, and yet, if you don’t, it may be lost in the time it takes for it to become convenient.

Great writers know that inspiration is random and fleeting. They know that when inspiration hits, they must immediately take action and record it’s message. Your writing will also benefit if you have prepared yourself to be able to record these thoughts as they arrive.

Basic Article Writing Tips To Help You With Capturing Your Thoughts And Ideas

1. Always carry a notepad and a working pen or mechanical pencil with you. A small notepad will fit easily into a pant pocket or a compartment of a purse. Then, when something inspires you, irritates you or gives you a good feeling, you have somewhere to capture creative ideas that form as a result.

Some people carry a miniature flashlight to ensure they are able to see and write. It definitely comes in handy if you awaken in the night with a burst of inspiration.

2. Use a voice recorder. Regardless of where you are or what you happen to be doing, a voice recorder is a simple and easy way of recording your ideas and the emotion that inspired it as well. A tape recorder, mp3 player or even cell phone that has the ability to record your voice will work in this situation and can be used just about anywhere.

You may get some people looking at you in a funny manner, but don’t let that bother you. You are being creative and also doing what is best for you and your business.

3. Use Text Messaging or Email. Many newcomers to the online marketing field also hold down full time jobs as they work to build their online businesses. Most companies that you will be working for will require you to make use of a computer and email.

When inspiration hits, open a new email to your personal email address and use it as a means of recording your ideas. Make sure you flag the email with a subject line that gives you a clue later on as to what it is about or you may end up skipping it.

4. Use Google Docs. If you have a free Gmail account, you also have access to Google Docs. This program is located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen when you open your Gmail account online. Simply click on the link that is named Documents and a new tab or window will open.

Google has included a program here that allows you to create simple word or excel type documents that are accessible by you from anywhere that you have access to a computer and the Internet. This is a great tool, particularly if you have ideas or work that you want to record, but do not want them to appear on the computer that you are using at the time.

Inspiration rarely strikes at times that are convenient and if you have not prepared yourself in advance with a means of capturing your thoughts and ideas, they may be forever lost to you.

Read through the basic article writing tips above to give yourself ideas on how to capture creative ideas as they occur, even if you are in the middle of rush hour traffic or awakened in the dead of night.

Finding the right niche for you may be a rather fairly obvious and easy process, or it may be somewhat harder than you first anticipated.

First of all, many of us have a variety of passions and interests, but over the years, our need struggle with every day life commitments may have put those passions and interests so far to the back of our minds that they are not easily thought of.

If this is the case for you, you may need four steps rather than three, in which your first is to identify areas that you are passionate about and that are capable of holding your interest.

Learning niche marketing involves being able to identify your niche. If you are not sure precisely sure which one is right for you, try out these three steps.

1. Brainstorming Your Niche

Brainstorming your niche begins with writing down all of your interests and hobbies that you are passionate about. Passion will play a key role in your ability to get through any rough parts that lie ahead and increase the chances of you sticking it out for the long haul.

Once you have broadly identified your potential niche, look for narrower terms within that broad category to help you reduce the focus of your niche and its potential customer base.

This part of your search will be a bit more difficult and you might want to make use of some of the keyword tools that are available, such as the free version of Wordtracker and Google’s External Keyword Tool. The terms these tools come up with that relate to your broad niche can act as hints that you are able to use to narrow down the focus of your niche to a less competitive segment.

2. Prove The Commercial Viability of Your Proposed Niche

There is no point in pouring your heart and soul into a niche that has no income potential. Therefore, once you have narrowed down your niche as far as you feel it can go, use related keywords to do a quick search on Google and prove the commercial viability of your proposed niche.

Are there ads that are showing up in the top 3 spots on the left and along the right side when the search results are returned? How many ads are showing up?

If there are hundreds of ads showing, you have proven commercial viability. However, it may be impossible for someone to break into a niche that has such fierce competition. This many ads means there is money to be made, but you will need to narrow your focus down even further if you want your business to be found.

If there is no ads what so ever, or only one or two ads showing up for your niche search terms, you may be using the wrong terms or there is simply no money to be made in this niche.

In this case, you may have to give the niche a broader focus or do some more keyword research to find terms that people are using in their search queries and that also pertain to your niche. “How to knit blue bonnets for baby boys” may make a good blog post, but it would most likely be too narrow a niche to be commercially viable.

The other thing for you to consider is how new the niche may be. If you are looking at a new game that has just been released, ad competition may not have yet begun. If this is the case, it is good news, as you will gain a head start on any future competition.

If there are a reasonable amount of ads showing up so as to indicate that you have a chance to promote that search term and gain a top listing in the search results, then you have found a good potential niche to work with.

Now, keep in mind that the determining of what constitutes a reasonable amount of ads is a somewhat vague figure and you may need to do further research to see if the same ads keep showing up over a period of 2 or more weeks. Advertisers will pull ads for search terms that are not returning good results.

3. Find Niche Products To Resell

Once you have proven commercial viability, the next step will be to find niche products to resell. Digital products such as those found on Clickbank are the easiest to work with, particularly when you are just starting out.

Other sources that you might want to check out are other affiliate marketing centers like Commission Junction and eBay. There are many other affiliate marketing centers available that you can easily do a search for, but these are the top 3 that most people get started with.

If you have your own product to sell, this step may be unnecessary. Most newcomers to niche marketing do not have a product of their own and will need to find niche products to resell that are of interest to their target market. Another way of identifying these products is to look at the ads that are showing up in your search queries.

Finally, joining in on the conversation online that people within your target niche market are having will help you to identify the issues and problems this market is facing and trying to solve. With that information in hand, you will find products to help solve those issues more easily.

Remember to look at the terms and conditions of selling the products you are considering ensuring they are not overly restrictive. You will also want to know the amount that must be sold before you are paid. This amount may be different depending on where the affiliate program for the product is found.

Big businesses do not have the time or manpower to focus on the selling of individual products. This is where niche affiliate marketing steps in and helps to fill that gap. A key component of learning niche marketing is to learn how to identify your niche. Consider the three steps above to help you with finding the right niche for you.

No discussion of blog monetization would be complete without at least touching on generating adsense revenue. At this time, Google leads the pack as the most popular of the available search engines.

In addition to their search engine capabilities, they have also developed a number of tools that advertisers can use to create income streams. “Google Adsense,” is one of their tools used for generating adsense revenue on blogs.

Google Adsense provides you with a method of earning income through indirect advertising. A lot of people are uncomfortable with the concept of directly advertising their own products or the products they are affiliated with. So, Google’s Adsense makes it easier for you, the blog owner to add this blog monetization technique to your blog, even if you have little or no advertising skills or background.

The Ins and Outs

To get started generating adsense revenue with Google Adsense, you will need to be signed up with a Google account. You only need one free account to get started and it is generally tied to the Gmail account that you use for your business. As only one account is used no matter how many businesses you work with, ensure you use one that is generically available for all.

Once your Google account is in place, the next step would be to register your blog or website with Google so that it is indexed. Generally, Google will require you to add a bit of code on the site that acts as proof of your ownership. This allows Google to assign you an ID that will be used to identify clicks that originate from your sites.

Indexing tells the search engine what your site is all about. The ID helps Google to know who to pay when people click on ads shown on your blog. Because this ID is unique to you and your business, it will be incorporated into any coding you make use of.

The next step would be to create the ads using the Google Adsense interface that you would like to incorporate into your blog. Ads can be set up in a variety of styles, sizes and colors to allow you to get the best fit for the area they will show.

Google Adsense is a popular method of blog monetization as it is designed to work with the content that has been posted. The Ad “senses” the topic being written about and searches through its database to find the ads that are most relevant to that topic. It is up to you, the blog owner, to place these ads where they will get noticed without annoying your readers. All good things can be overdone.

It is important that you read and familiarize yourself with the policies and conditions Google sets out for this or any other Google program you wish to participate in. While signing up is a relatively simple process, failure to follow what Google expects may result in termination of your account, which in turn could impact any other areas of Google’s services that you might be using.

One of the main benefits of using Google Adsense is that you do not have to baby sit these ads. Because of their topic “sensing” abilities, the ads will change to adapt to the content of each individual blog post, leaving you free to do what you do best, create more content. And, when you are ready to increase your monetizing efforts and move on to areas such as Adwords, you will already have your account created in Google.

Use It For All Your Blogs

As mentioned above, your business only requires a single account with Google to get started. This one account is used for all of your businesses and blogs, which means that you are able to set up Adsense ads on all of your blogs and customize each ad accordingly. The tools provided by Google allow you to keep track of any income generated by any sites your Adsense code has been set up on.

Using Google Adsense to develop another income stream from your blog is not going to make you rich. However, it may generate a few cents, or even a few dollars a day, which over time, certainly adds up. Most individuals that earn more significant amounts from Adsense have a large number of blogs or web pages set up all over the Internet. The bottom line is that if it is not set up, it most definitely will not be adding income to your bottom line.

If you are not the advertising type, or do not have the time, knowledge or even interest in setting up advertising campaigns on your blog, Google Adsense provides you with a means of generating adsense revenue that is simple to use, set and forget.

Unlike most published authors, article writers are largely responsible for cleaning up and editing their work prior to submission. If you are posting your article on your own website or blog, you will be the final judge on how well it is written.

If the article will be submitted for public use online, it will be given to an editor there for approval before it is approved for publication.

Basic Article Marketing Tips For Writing and Editing Articles:

Composing a good article is generally done in stages. First and foremost is the research stage where you are learning and adding to your knowledge of the subject of the article, as well as finding the keywords that will provide the SEO factor in the article.

Next will come the draft stage. An article can have several drafts, not unlike any other published work.

The first draft is the creative draft. This is the stage where you simply sit down and write. There may be little rhyme or reason too much of what is written. The purpose is to release all of your creative knowledge of a subject. Some liken this stage to a toddler coloring outside the lines and this stage can be a bit of a problem for A type personalities like myself, who have an inherent need to correct as they go.

One way that I get around this is to work with Notepad instead of Word so that the editor in Word is not constantly prompting with spelling and grammatical errors. It is very hard to concentrate on the free style type of writing that the first draft represents when Word is shaking its grammatical finger.

As the purpose of the first draft stage is to spew out as much information as is possible without regard for correction, I find Notepad to be the most effective program in which to work.

A second consideration that many are unaware of is that some of the characterization that Word uses is unacceptable to systems used by article directories.

If you have ever come across an article with weird looking characters in the typing, most likely that article was originally written in Word. Notepad does not add this type of characterization to the body of your work and will look better when pasted in for publishing. Either way you will want to preview the article or blog post before hitting the publish button.

Once you have squeezed out every ounce of inspiration you have on your subject, it is time for editing your draft. This may in fact be more than one draft. It is important that you retain your first draft as you work through this stage as mistakes can occur and you may inadvertently remove something that you could use at another point in the article.

The easiest way to do this is to save the original draft under a name such as articleone-draftone.txt. Then use the Save As option to resave your work as articleone-editone.txt.

This gives you two distinct copies, one copy to edit and the original copy to refer to. Repeat the “Save As” as often as is needed. You can always go back and delete the copies you no longer need later when you are finished. You may even end up retaining more than one copy if you find that the creative stage produced enough material to inspire more than one article.

The editing stage has an art to it of its own. From your research of what is expected in the way of article length by the directory to which you are submitting, you will have a length in mind for your article. However, you do not want to slash and cut at will.

Ensure that the main points of the article are covered. A good way to do this is to have a basic outline of the points you want to cover. Re-arrange this information and follow this outline as you begin editing your draft.

Final Stages For Editing Your Draft

1. Grammar Check

This is where the Word program can help you out. Once you have the basic article written, copy and paste it into Word and use Word’s spellchecker and grammar editor to identify problem areas. Make changes to your copy in notepad as they are identified in Word.

For the most part, this grammatical check will catch the majority of mistakes that are made. It will not, however, catch mistakes like the replacement of words that sound alike but are spelt differently such as replacing the word sun with the word son. So, it is important that you don’t rely completely on this check and use your own eyes to read through the material to ensure it makes sense.

2. Read The Article Out Loud

It is amazing really how different an article can sound when it is read out loud. Suddenly, sentences that looked perfectly fine on paper come across as disjointed or stilted. You will notice that you will automatically correct in your head as you read.

This is because what is written does not fit with how you would speak. If it doesn’t make sense to you, chances are high that it will not flow well for your readers either.

3. Cut Out the Big Words

It is recommended that when writing for public use, you simplify the way you write in a manner that would be appropriate for someone with a third or fourth grade education. The use of complicated words and explanations will only serve to be impressive to you if the reader is unfamiliar with the terminology you are using.

There really is no point to writing something that no one but you is able to understand. The result will be a reader that moves on quickly to someone else’s work. Wherever possible, simplify, and where it is not possible, provide adequate explanation so that the reader is able to follow along easily.

4. Slim It Down Or Build It Up

If the article directory that you are targeting has a limit on the size of the article and the number of words that can be used, now is the time to slim the article down even further. On the other hand, if you find that you are not quite meeting the expected word count, this is also the time to add to your article so that it meets any word count requirements.

Make sure that as you go through this process you are also taking the time to read through the article to determine that it still makes sense and continues to flow well following any additions or cuts.

5. Keyword Check

Now that you have the basic article completed and you are reaching the final stages of editing your article, it is time to review your article with SEO in mind. Have you added in the keywords that the article was to target? What is the keyword density within the article?

Do you need to rephrase any sentences to fit the keyword or keyword phrase into the article in a more natural manner? Does your title contain your keywords or keyword phrase and does it make sense as written?

6. Take A Break

This is something that I personally find to be of significant help. Once you have completed your article, walk away from it for several hours at least, if not a day or more. It really is amazing how well this works to allow you to see the article with fresh eyes. What made perfect sense when you finished may now sound a bit off and will prompt you to make additional changes.

Whenever you find this happening, once again put the article aside for a period of time and come back to it later. This process of looking at your article with fresh eyes will save you from having to make corrections once the article or posting has been published.

Writing and editing articles is an important skill used by online marketers in their efforts to become known in their niche market and their efforts to increase traffic to their site.

While it is important to develop your own process for producing articles, be sure that you include both the creative and the editing phases. The basic article marketing tips provided above can be used as a guide to get you started with the process of composing and editing your article.

Learning niche marketing is like learning any other profession in life. Until you do so, you are on the outside looking in. There are many aspects that go into any profession and niche marketing is no different. Understanding niche marketing, just like understanding accounting or any other profession comes when the terminology begins to fall into place and you become proficient in the tasks involved in that profession.

Every profession has its own language, so to speak, and those on the inside understand when that terminology is used. I recall when I first began training in the computer field and was awed and overwhelmed by the terms and acronyms being used.

Until I understood that SCSI stood for small computer systems interface, any discussion on that topic went over my head. Once I understood the term and its association with my profession, it became a part of my professional vocabulary. So you see, understanding niche marketing in part involves understanding the terminology as it is used within the profession.

Today lets take a look at the most obvious term, the word “niche.” This is a term that is frequently used in the every day world and most of us have an understanding of its meaning when used in a biological or corporate context. When we are told that someone has found his or her niche in life, we have no problem understanding that someone has found where he or she is happiest in life.

Defining The Word Niche

The above definition of the word “niche” is correct in the context of our everyday world, but it takes on a different meaning when used in the context of the Internet marketing profession. In order to be a niche marketer, you need to have a clear understanding of what the word “niche” means within that context.

Wikipedia’s definition for the term niche market is “the subset of the market on which a specific product is focusing on.”

This definition may still be unclear to you the reader, as it is not written in a manner that we would normally use to describe something. In a nutshell it means that a niche market is a smaller piece or section of a commonly accepted market.

By way of example, we could say that ladies shoes is a smaller section (or niche) of the ladies clothing market while ladies Italian shoes is an even smaller niche within the same clothing market.

Keeping with the same example, what other niches could we find within the ladies clothing or even the ladies shoes market? To name just a few, we might have…

casual shoes

work shoes

nursing shoes

running shoes

evening wear

hand made shoes

The list we could potentially come up with would be never ending. Any one of these areas listed is a niche within the ladies clothing market that can be focused on and promoted. Even within the ones listed above, there are several potential “micro” or sub-niches such as Dansko nursing shoes, which would be a sub-niche, focused on one supplier within the nursing shoes niche.

Understanding niche marketing begins with understanding the word “niche” within the Internet marketing context. Without this understanding, it will be difficult for you to pin point which niche you will be working with.

If you are unable to define your niche, you will also be unable to identify and understand the type of potential customer your marketing efforts will target. If you don’t know your customer, how are you going to be able to pick out products and services that customer may be interested in?

Defining the word “niche” plays an important role in learning niche marketing overall. Now that you are sure what it means, your next step will be finding the right niche for you to work with. The right niche, especially for those just starting in niche marketing will involve in some way a hobby or interest that you have.

Once you have gone through the process of finding the right niche for you and you have identified “your niche,” there will be a lot more for you to learn about this new profession that you have chosen, but that is a topic for another day.
