There are several types of writing that fall under the heading of copywriting, most of which pertain to the advertising and marketing fields. Any writing that you do, which is intended to convince your reader to take action of some sort falls under the heading of copywriting.
If you want the reader to buy a product, leave a comment, or sign up for an event or email series, you will use your copywriting skills to persuade them to do so.
Why Do You Need Good Website Copy?
The whole purpose of business is to persuade a potential customer to become a buying customer. Your business won’t bring in much in the way of income until you are able to give it the opportunity to do this. Customers that are not engaged by your website copy will soon vanish in pursuit of other businesses that can engage their interest.
When writing for online business, the expanse of the market you are dealing with is both an asset and a liability. While you have an entire planet of people to try to sell to, you also have a multitude of like-minded online business owners who would be more than happy to have a chance to sell to your potential customer.
Learning to write good website copy is what will help you to draw in potential customers and keep them coming back to your site.
What Are The Various Types Of Copywriting?
One of the most familiar examples of website copywriting is sales copy. Anyone who has been involved with online marketing for any length of time has landed on a sales page at least once.
In the physical world we would call it a flyer or sales letter. The intent of a sales page is to introduce a service or product to a prospective customer and persuade him or her to part with his or her money in exchange for that service or product.
The main components of a sales page would be the title, a concise description of the service or product, detailing of the benefits of owning the product, pricing and guarantee and finally, the call to action where you ask the customer to make a purchase.
The next most common example would be the landing page. A landing page is a page that the customer arrives at (lands on), when they click on a link. Landing pages are often used in conjunction with affiliate programs and generally contain a clear description of the product that is being sold, followed by your call to action where you ask the customer to purchase the service or product.
Landing pages may also be used to redirect a customer’s interest from one product to another. They might follow an ad that targets an opposing product and convinces the potential customer to visit the landing page to see what other alternatives are available to the product they were investigating. The call to action here may be to ask the customer to click through to your sales page or possibly even sign up on for an email series in the same area of interest.
Product descriptions are another example of copywriting that can be used on a website. Learning how to write a product description that tells the potential customer all he or she wants to know so that they do not feel the need to look elsewhere for more information leads to more sales.
Because product description are relatively short, you have less time and words with which to capture the buyers interest and convince them that it is your “Buy” button that they will benefit the most from clicking.
Even press releases require good copywriting skills. They are used in much the same manner as news headlines to inform the world of any new and exciting happenings in and around your business.
So you see, when you learn more about copywriting, you are developing skills that will enhance many areas of your online business. Producing good website copy in the form of words and images will help your business to find an edge in the competitive world of online marketing and help you turn visitors into buyers.
