List Building Tips: What Is List Building?
Whether online or offline, one of the most difficult aspects of building a business is actually drumming up business. If your business is to be a success, you need to be able to entice people to take action of some sort.
The action you are encouraging people to take may include visiting, commenting, opting-in to your email list, or purchasing your product. When it comes to doing business online, you want to reach people with the most interest in your product or service. List building is one method that is used to reach these people.
What Is List Building?
Basically, list building is the creation of an inventory of people who are most interested in the niche market you have targeted. The old school methods used in list building were based on the assumption that if you cast a net wide enough, you would eventually build a list of the type of people you were looking for. Using this old school mentality today would be a fairly costly process. New school methods involve tightening the focus of your list building efforts to target the type of person you are seeking.
There are many methods that might be used to develop a list for your online business. Here are a few popular ways that are being successfully used:
- Blogging
- Contests
- Free Giveaways
- Social Marketing
- Article Marketing
- Email Marketing (Opt-ins)
While these methods are effective, it is imperative that you yourself know where you are coming from and where you are headed before you can expect others to follow you.
Getting Your Name Out There
Just like your website needs to be visible for people to visit, people won’t follow you if you are invisible. People need to get to know you and what you stand for before they will follow your lead. Networking and building your brand within your niche is a better use of your time in the beginning than focusing on list building.
It makes sense. Ask yourself if you would typically buy from someone you don’t know? Normally most people would not.
People will be more likely to sign up with someone they know or someone that has been recommended to them by another they know. It is not the business they buy from, but the person behind the business. Someone they have come to know and trust.
Trust is earned over time. You must begin by creating curiosity so that people will be interested in finding out more about you. As they come to know you, they will learn to trust you.
One of the best ways to get noticed is to use Viral marketing. Begin with asking friends, family members, and others that you know to help you out. If they participate in blogs, forums or social media sites, they are in a good position to spread the word around about you and what you are doing. Third party endorsement is often perceived as having a higher trust factor than tooting your own horn.
Your part of the equation is to visit blogs and other sites that are associated with the service or product that you are selling. Make your presence known by getting involved, asking questions and wherever possible, helping others to solve their problems. These are the people that you will eventually ask to give their endorsement of credibility for you, your business and your products, so get out there and let them get to know you.
As you begin promoting using the methods listed in the bulleted points above, traffic will increase. People looking for what you are offering will sniff you out. If they like what they see, they will be more inclined to provide you with their name and email and opt-in to your list.
Always keep in mind that their permission is temporary. Your job at this point is to keep them interested enough to remain on your list and eventually, develop their relationship with you into that of a loyal customer.

Hi:
Thank you for the information here.
I already have a small list for my business.
However, I am a simple cabinet maker who would love to just be able to put my material on the web so the public could see my work.
I have spent five years doing nothing but refining my design and bench skills.
But, during that time, it seems others have been thinking about how to use the net to do who knows what. I don’t understand what they are saying.
Anyway, I would just like to find a place where someone would start with step one and just show me how to do some simple web site that makes sense for my business.
Right now, I know where the on button is (I guess that’s a switch) for my computer, and that’s about it.
Hi Beth, I frequently hear from people that have spent their time developing their craft and have had little or no time to spend on computer skills.
My first suggestion to these people is always the same. Find a basic computer skills class in your area and sign up. Online marketing involves a fair amount of time at the keyboard and before you invest in any other training, this is an inexpensive way to get comfortable with some of the basic computer skills you will need.
Many community clubs, at least around here, offer evening classes that are sufficient to teach you the basics of how to manage files, use compression programs such as Winzip and how work with basic programs such as notepad.
A computer is a tool, just like the tools you use in your cabinetry. You learned how to use those tools to produce your product. Now it is time to learn the basics of a new tool to promote your product. Getting comfortable with your computer will help make learning online marketing a whole lot easier and possibly even enjoyable.
To Your Success,
